インドの国歌『Jana Gana Mama』とは、「インドの朝」といった意味です。 作詞・作曲したのは、インドの「詩聖」として著名な詩人、 ラヴィーンドラナート・タゴール（＝タークル）（Rabindranath Tagore / 1861年5月7日〜1941年8月7日）です。
タゴールが書いたオリジナルのベンガル語による詩は、1番から5番まであります。 国歌としては1番のみが歌われています。ちなみに、公の場で最初に 歌われたのは、1911年12月11日にカルカッタで開かれたインド国民議会です。
1950年1月24日には、インドの憲法制定議会によって正式にインドの国歌として採用されています。
『Jana Gana Mama』は、 いかにもインドらしいフィーリングに満ちた、スケール感溢れる美しい曲です。管理人お気に入りの国歌の一つです。
タゴールは、1913年にアジア人として初のノーベル文学賞を受賞していますが、 バングラデシュの国歌もタゴールが作詞・作曲しています。
